Cultural Safaris

Africa is a myriad of native cultures; some of which are the oldest in the world. As you explore the many forests, shorelines, plains, mountains and other areas, you may come across ruins that document the long history of some of Africa’s tribes.
The idea of an African ‘cultural experience’ sometimes makes us cringe. It brings to mind superficial tribal dancing and local people forced into demeaning, stereotypical roles. Rest assured: this is absolutely not what we offer.

A Cultural Safari by Sun Africa Expeditions is your chance to meet and interact with indigenous people on a personal and intimate level. Our authentic village visits stand apart from other similar activities as we carefully consider the impact of tour activities on the communities, we simply do not send visitors to interact with local people who live in Africa's more fragile, original cultures unless we can be sure that it'll be beneficial to both our visitors and their hosts. We schedules guest visits so as not to interfere or negatively impact day-to-day life and ancient ceremonies, yet still give every guest a memorable experience.

We can, though, arrange for you to have an inside look into cultural weddings, traditional dances, rites of passage for warriors and other practices. Travelers may even be invited to help prepare a meal, make jewelry, tend to the household tasks, gather plants & herbs, herd cattle, and you may even master their varied skills, such as spear throwing or even milking the cow. You are constantly enlightened about the meanings behind subtle cultural signs, such as beads, face paint, skin incisions and gestures. These authentically and comfortable occur mostly in East Africa which is at the forefront of cultural tourism with a vibrant, extant and mostly intentionally insulated cultural communities in Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania as well as various pockets of Africa like northern Namibia home to the Himba community alongside Makgadikgadi and Central Kalahari Game Reserve areas of Botswana, home to the San Bushmen tribe. Sun Africa Expeditions works closely with a team of accommodation suppliers and their surrounding indigenous villages to sustain mutually-beneficial relationships with native cultures. To this end, we support ethnic activities that enhance the quality of life through employment, community programs, education, health and selling of arts and crafts. When you participate in our cultural tours of Southern and Eastern Africa, you leave an imprint on our people just as much as they leave a lasting watermark on you.
