New Airstrip in Pian Upe-Northeastern Uganda
The new airstrip in Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve, north-eastern Uganda, has welcomed its first chartered flight, making the region more accessible to tourists.
Pian Upe’s new airstrip marks an important milestone in the restoration of the country’s second-biggest wildlife reserve.
Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve is Uganda’s second-largest protected area and a critical conservation area in Northeastern Uganda. The landscape hosts the greatest diversity of species of large plains mammals, including cheetah, the endangered African wild dog, rare subspecies of roan antelopes, and Nubian giraffes. The Southern region contributes to the internationally recognized Lake Opeta, an Important Bird Area under Birdlife International designation. Approximately 520 bird endemic and migratory bird species have been recorded in Pian Upe. The landscape is home to Uganda’s Karamoja community, who depend on it for their social and economic needs.
