This year marks a somber milestone: 30 years since the horrific genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. The scars of those events, which began in April 1994, remain deeply etched in the memories of survivors.
Rwanda held its annual commemoration, Kwibuka (meaning “Remember” in Kinyarwanda), in the capital Kigali. World leaders, including former US President Bill Clinton, Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland, and former South African President Thabo Mbeki, joined Rwandans in remembrance.
The theme for 2024 was “Remember – Unite – Renew.” President Paul Kagame lit the Flame of Remembrance at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a poignant symbol that will burn for 100 days to honor the victims.
