14 DAYS KENYA & TANZANIA MIGRATION
Day 1: Coffee stop in Arusha
Just as a hot cup of coffee is a good way to start your day, so a night at Arusha Coffee Lodge is a great start to your East African safari. Set in the green fields of the Burka Estate coffee farm, the lodge is built around the original farmhouse.
The genteel service is unobtrusive, getting you into a holiday mood. Have a relaxing massage or beauty treatment at the Peaberries spa, or a refreshing swim in the pool before retiring to your Plantation Room, complete with a large 4-poster bed and en suite bathroom. Arusha Coffee Lodge is set in the foothills of Mount Meru, the fifth highest mountain in Africa.
While you are here, you can visit the Tanzanite Museum or the Masaai Market in the town, or learn more about coffee on the estate tour.
Days 2 – 3: Tarangire National Park
From town to country and Sanctuary Swala becomes your home for the next two nights. Located in a secluded area of Tarangire National Park, home to large herds of elephant and one of the least-visited parks in Tanzania, Swala is in the heart of Maasai country. The camp is open to the wild and elephants are known to amble past your tent.
Huge old baobabs dot the landscape and the camp’s thatched deck, lounge and library are built around a huge tree. Escape the heat in the infinity pool without skipping a game-viewing beat: the pool overlooks a waterhole that draws elephants, lions and leopards. When it comes to dining, make sure to taste the camp’s signature dish, Chocolate Kilimanjaro, which resembles the snow-capped peaks of Kili.
Sanctuary Swala is an eco-friendly lodge with a low carbon footprint. There are 12 pavilion-style tents, each with an en suite bathroom that feature indoor and outdoor showers, as well as a private deck with views across the plains. And to keep in touch, there is Wi-Fi throughout the lodge. While you are here, enjoy a night drive to see the park’s nocturnal inhabitants and take a walking safari; getting out of the 4×4 opens you to a very different experience.
Days 4 – 6: Lake Manyara & Ngorongoro Crater
Day four and it is time to leave Swala for the alluring Escarpment Luxury Lodge on the edge of Lake Manyara National Park, sandwiched between the Great Rift Valley and the lake. Set high above the valley floor, the wide deck invites you to drink in the view of Lake Manyara and the gorge. You can also freshen up after your journey in the swimming pool, watching as the animals roam through the unfenced grounds.
There are 16 chalets, all en suite with tubs and indoor and outdoor showers. The rooms are geared for families and can be configured for singles, doubles or triples. Each chalet has a private deck built to maximize the view. The trees grow right up to the deck and twittering birds are your neighbors. Each chalet has a small lounge for some quiet time alone, while the main area offers a convivial bar and dining is either under the stars or under thatch.
The itinerary is flexible, giving you the freedom to decide how to spend your day: consider breakfast before or on or even after a game drive; lunch at the lodge or alfresco. Add a visit to Lake Manyara National Park as well as Ngorongoro Crater, one of the most famous of Africa’s landmarks. And be sure to take a nature walk with a Masaai warrior, which is a particularly educational treat for children. On the plains, spot giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, ostrich, elephant and hopefully the occasional leopard. In the lake, there are hippos and over 380 species of birds, most notably a carpet of fuchsia flamingos.
Days 7 – 9: On the move- Serengeti
Follow the annual wildebeest migration with Sanctuary Serengeti Migration Camp: the camp moves between three locations in the footsteps of the herds as they travel across the Serengeti. The tents are set up in Western Serengeti from April to July, Northern Serengeti from August to November, and Southern Serengeti from December to March.
Serengeti Migration Camp is delightfully intimate: there are just 10 traditional safari tents, each with an en suite bathroom. Water is heated and the bucket shower is filled by your personal tent attendant whatever the time of day. Swap stories with fellow travellers in the dining tent, bar and lounge. Take breakfast in the bush before returning to camp or spend the whole day out game viewing and enjoy lunch with a view; your itinerary is up to you.
The Serengeti’s most famous inhabitants are the wildebeest and zebras, of course, but where the plains game goes, the hungry predators follow. Watch for lion, leopard and cheetah, as well as African wild dog and hyena. There are also elephant, buffalo, antelope and giraffe. And for birders, there are about 500 species, including ostrich, secretary birds, crowned crane, marabou storks, martial eagles, lovebirds and vultures.
Days 10 – 14: Kenyan sojourn
The Masai Mara is calling; settle into the gentle Sanctuary Olonana on the meandering Mara River. The camp was built along sustainable lines and there is strong focus on conservation and community projects. You can visit the Enkereri School project, Enkereri Biogas project, Masaai Women’s Beadwork project, the Wetlands project, organic gardening or even indigenous tree planting work.
There are lots of learning opportunities, especially for youngsters, with the Masaai warriors keen to share their know-how on guided nature walks or during village visits. On game drives, watch out for lion, buffalo, elephant, hyena, leopard and cheetah, among many other animals. A noisy hippo family lives in the river below the camp and you can listen to their grunting and chortling while relaxing on the deck. Traditional African remedies and treatments are available at the spa.
The 12 canvas tents at Sanctuary Olonana have families in mind. They are all en suite and all have two 4-poster beds with mosquito netting. Each has a deck overlooking the river. There are also two honeymoon suites, each with a private outdoor shower. Tot up your amazing experiences before you say farewell to Olonana and your East African adventure.
This marks the end of what we hope will be an adventurous trip- Thank you very much!
